ABOUT THE ARTIST
Vicky is a self-taught artist from Johannesburg, South Africa. A year ago, she gave up her apartment and has been travelling by car around Europe … which has made painting a lot more complicated, but she does it anyway.
Her influences are surrealism and magic realism.
"My art is very personal. Each painting is a visual metaphor of a strong emotion I feel – as a woman in the world, a traveller and foreigner, a human being both intrigued and horrified by human behaviour.
I explore themes of freedom and uncertainty, powerlessness and agency, love and loss, femininity and frustration, as well as human weakness - both mine and others'.
My work can be humorous or serious or both. And each piece always starts the exact same way: a clear image in my head that I don’t fully understand at the tim,e and slowly but surely decipher during the painting process. In the beginning, it’s like working blind and I often have to repaint things because they just don’t feel “right”.
One painting takes me an average of two years to complete."
