VOL II | 2024

ARTIST, MOTHER,
PROUD & SERIOUS

It's not a typical art book. It's the ultimate collection of powerful stories of women who face challenges and their fears head-on.

Artist, Mother, Proud & Serious is a labour of love. It is a tribute to women who often find themselves on the edge of the art world because they don't fit the stereotype of what "a professional artist" should look like. They often feel like having to justify their passion for the arts and their time in the studio.

Historically, a female artist who is also a mother, has not been considered an art book material. That is, until we came along and pushed the boundaries with our 400-page VOL I.

We see you.

As a young woman, the scope of my understanding of the art world, both its nature and potential, was grievously limited. The arts were treated as hobbies, not paths leading to a noble and viable career. This is a sad reality that still persists. Imagine the art we miss as a global community because young people are funneled into careers that can’t ever answer their inner longing to create! The art world is wide and marvelous, and there is space in it for everyone. I would have young people know this. I would have them equipped and supported. I would have them affirmed in their artistic pursuits not dissuaded. And I would have them mentored into success by artists who have gone before them.

I think artist mothers are now, more visible than ever.  The impact of the digital world create a space for artists who are confined within 4 walls of their home.  This bridges the gap to the art world to make this work of caregivers seen.

Birth and Caregiving are the unseen work.  It is powerful work, which many artist mothers depict in their studio practice.  Being able to share images and videos of birth and caregiving with our bodies, such as breastfeeding is hidden from society.  Making work about these taboo topics is vital to normalizing it.

Making work about birth and postpartum instill value in it.  Sharing our work with each other, sharing our stories and experiences creates community and unity.

All children start off as brilliant creative beings.  So, I suppose that my ultimate wish is that we do not squash children’s dreams by forcing them into boxes we deem acceptable at a certain age.

Instead, I’d love to provide budding artists with the tools and training to work their way to their goal, including business fundamentals. Perhaps this would do away with the perpetuation of the belief that it is a rare individual who can earn an income from art, while also still suggesting that one can perhaps buy that magical blueprint for the price of a hefty investment.  Why don’t we just start off early and be consistent in the message?
