ARTIST BIO
Alessandra Imperio started her career in physics, earning a PhD in Physics from the Università Statale di Milano in 2004, but she gradually discovered that her true passion lies in creating, particularly in comics, which allow her to combine multiple skills—storytelling, illustration, and composition—into a single project. After graduating in Illustration and Animation from IED Milan in 2014, she collaborated on various independent projects while always keeping time to develop her own stories. Alessandra also enjoys Urban Sketching, capturing scenes quickly, as it helps her understand places more deeply and observe people in their everyday life. These sketches often inspire details and gestures that later appear in her comics and illustrations.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I began my journey in physics, but over time I realized that I find more fulfillment in creating, especially through comics. Comics allow me to combine different skills—storytelling, illustration, composition—into one process, and I enjoy the way they let me explore ideas visually and narratively at the same time.
Much of my work revolves around how people navigate worlds shaped by technology and control. In Chameleon Code, for example, I explore a dystopian future influenced by surveillance and constant monitoring, reflecting on how these systems touch everyday life. I’m interested in how individuals react, adapt, or resist, and in portraying both the tension and small moments of humanity that emerge in such environments.
My process is about observation, experimentation, and attention to detail. I like building worlds that feel lived-in, with characters and settings that invite readers to pause and think. I balance personal projects with commissioned work, but the stories I create for myself are where I can explore ideas fully, without pressure to impress anyone.
Through my art, I hope to invite curiosity and reflection. I aim to create experiences that are immersive yet approachable, speculative yet grounded, and to connect with readers who are willing to enter these worlds and think along with me.
