ARTIST BIO

Maggie Kotuk was born in 1945 and raised in the heart of Greenwich Village, a place and time bursting with creative energy, and artistic experimentation. Immersed in this environment from a young age, Maggie developed an intuitive connection to the arts that would go on to shape the rest of her life. Her journey began at just seven years old, when she first encountered a piece from her parents art collection by the artist David Burliuk. Burliuks bold work transformed her and showed her what art could be: not just something beautiful to look at, but a powerful language of feeling and storytelling. From that moment on, Maggie knew she wanted to be part of the art world. Since she couldn’t collect all the art that moved her, she chose instead to make her own. That decision, rooted in the wide-eyed wonder of childhood, became the foundation of a lifelong pursuit. Over the decades, Maggie has continued to paint and sculpt with the same sense of curiosity and emotional depth that inspired her as a child. Her work, as she is self-taught, is considered to be deeply personal, and ever-evolving. Each piece is a testament to the stories she’s lived and the truths she continues to explore through her creative practice. Today, with more than 70 years of artistic exploration behind her, Maggie Kotuk creates not only to express, but to connect. Maggie loves a good story, hidden in several of her commissioned portraits are hints of “another” perspective, or persona. Her narrative uses many mediums to be representational, folk, and primitive. Through her art, she invites others into her world, where every line and shape holds a story, and every story holds a piece of the artist herself.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a self-taught artist, and I consider my work to be representational, folk, and primitive. I have been working on “the journey,” as I describe my life as an artist, for over fifty years. I use animals to represent my life and to explore narratives. My work is deeply story-driven—each painting or sculpture tells a story, sometimes hidden, sometimes bold. I work across a range of mediums, from acrylics to masks made from animal skulls. With a strong focus on portraiture, my subjects are often drawn from a life surrounded by animals, history, and imagination.
