ARTIST BIO

Sonja Koning grew up as a girl in a small village on a farm, in a household shaped by traditional gender roles, where her mother’s voice was rarely the decisive one. From an early age, she learned that having physical space does not always mean having freedom in a figurative sense.

Her mother, who had been taken out of school to care for her siblings as the eldest daughter, nevertheless carried more modern views. Sometimes these were shared privately between mother and daughter, and sometimes they lived quietly within her silence and perseverance—a subtle yet powerful form of protest. She encouraged Sonja to pursue education, seize opportunities, and strive for independence.

The tension between her mother’s structured life and her quiet encouragement of autonomy profoundly shaped Sonja Koning, both as a person and as an artist.

ARTIST STATEMENT

By consciously working with natural light and minimal compositions, I create images that are subtle and quietly resonant. Themes of freedom, independence, and space recur throughout my work. Central to this is both the act of claiming space and the act of creating it: envisioning what is possible. The naked body serves as a symbol of freedom — the perfect balance between vulnerability, trust, and strength.

What if all the opportunities you were given — opportunities your parents or others may never have had — don’t automatically lead to change or improvement? How do you stay connected while also striving for independence? What can still be improved? And how does the passage of time affect all of this?

In my work, I engage with these questions. I begin again and again, creating possibilities and quietly passing on a message. I seek freedom — in movement and in transformation.
