CHERIE DALY

Location:

Toronto, ON, Canada

ARTIST BIO

After enrolling in the Central Tech Adult Art Program in 2016, Cherie Daly explored a range of mediums before discovering a deep passion for abstract painting, which led her to study with individual teachers such as Suzanne Metz. She works from a shared artists’ studio at 100 Sunrise Ave in Toronto as well as from a custom-built studio at her cottage in Muskoka. When not painting, she can often be found walking along Toronto’s Beach boardwalk or through the forests of Muskoka with her dogs. Environmental advocacy, nature, and her family remain central sources of inspiration.

Daly’s work has been exhibited at venues including the Federation Gallery and Artist Project Toronto. One of her recent pieces was shortlisted for the Women United Art Prize. She is a member of Muskoka Arts & Crafts and has been juried into the Ontario Society of Artists.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a fairly quiet person, but a very loud painter. Where I might hesitate to make my feelings known verbally, I let my paintbrush speak. I paint quickly, mainly with acrylics, using bold colours and very physical, full-arm strokes. My internal dialogue and feelings are translated through movement into the work using a variety of mark-making tools. My process is playful and free. The work is left raw, retaining its energy and initial vitality.

My art has been a source of strength and expression during challenging times, particularly while supporting a family member facing mental illness. My bold, funky, and youthful creations reflect the resilient spirit that underlines my artistic journey.
