ARTIST BIO
Grace Matos (b. 1992) is an interdisciplinary emerging artist. She works primarily on watercolor and oil paintings. Her works examine the process of drawing, using a suggestive cartographic language that challenges memory and the urge to encode meaning through lines and patterns of color.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Painting and Humanities from the University of Puerto Rico. She currently lives and works in New York.
ARTIST STATEMENT
In my practice, I focus on the plasticity that materials can offer, the never-ending conversation of mind over matter, and the possibilities of extrapolating life circumstances into a visual form. My process often starts by reconfiguring the surfaces into irregular shapes that resemble non-geographical locations. What are the limits of these materials? How is my mind transformed through each single process of application to a surface? How do threads intertwine with paper, wood, linen, or canvas? Studying the traditional methods in which a medium has been historically used offers a base for structural solutions; however, the process of building a surface for me happens organically.
Intentionally, I try to offer the viewer an aerial perspective as a way to distance myself from my own biases.
