ARTIST BIO

Susan Fleming is a mixed media artist whose layered paintings explore themes of spirituality, intuition, and emotional healing. Working in mixed media, she combines pastels, acrylics, watercolor, ink, specialty papers,
and digitally altered drawings to build textured compositions that blend abstraction, symbolism, and quiet figuration.

Her work is influenced by nature, subconscious imagery, and a personal connection to spiritual experience, inviting viewers into a contemplative space where inner landscapes take shape. Susan’s creative process is intuitive and meditative, allowing each piece to unfold gradually as emotions and forms surface through material exploration. Her art often reveals hidden narratives, offering a sense of quiet discovery and emotional resonance.

By merging thoughtful composition with layered surfaces, she creates works that encourage reflection and foster a sense of connection between personal memory and collective meaning. Susan approaches artmaking as both a healing practice and a way to share insight, presence, and transformation.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am Susan Fleming, a mixed media artist born and raised in Arizona where I completed my B.A. and M.A. in the Visual Arts with an emphasis on Fine Art Education. Teaching Fine Arts kept my creativity and imagination constantly flowing. Exploring and hiking around Arizona helped influence my love of nature and natural elements of which I have collected physical and mental images that reflect the world.

My recent transplant adventures to the Carolinas are also evolving into new creative self expressions, including spiritual renditions which are discovered while using many applications of multiple media layers; often mixing charcoal, colored pencil, water color, acrylics, pastels, collage collections, and original digitally altered photos and sketches.

The pieces seem to evolve through processes which are comprised of continuous intuitive decisions developing in harmony, I do not have predetermined outcomes, I love the discovery phases as they evolve. I truly enjoy this ceaseless urge toward fresh original abstract creations. I pray my art endeavors emotionally engage the viewers’ inner spirit and encourages personal healing, hope, and inspiration.
